Chew Chew Chow Tofu

Stinky tofu or known as fermented tofu is one of the delicacy that you can find in Hong Kong. In many Hong Kong chinese TV series or program, it was mention how stinky these tofu can be. Now we no longer need to fly all the way to HK to try because it is available in our very own night market.

Chew Chew Chow Tofu is the famous stinky tofu stall that can be found in many of our major night markets. Wednesday night in Taman Connaught night market is where I found them. As early as 5:30 p.m. people are already queuing up just to grab some when they only open at 6 p.m. and sometimes later. The queue is always there and you can't miss it. Even if you miss the queue you can't avoid the smell from far.

The famous 'Chew Chew Chow Tofu'

There are 2 types of tofu that are available for purchase; the small or the big cube of tofu. I have only taste the small ones but I heard from friends that the big ones are the smelliest. I enjoy the small ones because it is extremely crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. These fermented tofu are served with a special sauce together with pickled cabbage. 4 pieces of stinky tofu cost only RM2.

Yummy fermented tofu!

The difference between the fermented tofu here in KL with the one in HK is that the HK ones are not crunchy / crispy at all. It's basically soft like the usual tofu texture and juicy but the sauce is absolutely fantabulous! After consuming it, it is best that you rinse your mouth with some drinks and remember to brush your teeth before you go to bed.

For those that find it disgusting, well, you are missing out. You only live once, so go and give it a try!
